Infoblox bets on DNS security tech to support next-level networking experience

As businesses deepen their digital transformation to embrace remote work and online operations during the COVID-19 pandemic, significant challenges arise regarding technology automation and security.

Network security company Infoblox Inc. provides what it calls the “next-level networking” experience by managing increasingly complex network demands across diverse physical, virtual and cloud infrastructure. It focuses on identifying and managing devices connected to networks — specifically Domain Name System, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, and IP address management (collectively called DDI).

“DNS is essentially this ubiquitous platform, which is already there, [and] it can already provide the sort of security services by default,” said Craig Sanderson (pictured), vice president of security products at Infoblox. “If you’re trying to secure all these heterogeneous IoT devices, one thing they have in common, they’re all going to get an IP address, so we’re going to use DNS.”

Sanderson spoke with John Furrier, host of theCUBE, Silicon ANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during the how hard is computer science Next Level Network Experience event. They discussed the advantages of inserting security tools on DNS servers and how this system is different from other security solutions.

Virtual labs to assist Science and Engineering students in lockdown

Most of the colleges and universities in the state have started online lectures for their various courses from June. One of the major hurdles faced primarily by Science and Engineering students is of practical classes which need laboratory and physical equipment.

In an attempt to find a solution to this issue, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mumbai has now come forward and developed a ‘virtual lab’ for Engineering and Science students. Through these virtual labs around 60 to 70 per cent lab practicals can be undertaken and students will be essentially benefited from it.

The computer engineering salary University (SPPU) will be using this technology of virtual labs for their Science stream students. Most of the Engineering and Science colleges are finding new ways to continue their academic year on the background on Covid-19 pandemic. In the Science stream it is a bit difficult as along with online lectures, lab practical sessions are also equally important.

AT&T boosting wireless network capacity in PA with small cell technology

AT&T is requesting Port Arthur city officials begin permitting small cell nodes in the city as an upgrade to boost the city’s wireless network capacity during the coronavirus crisis.

The small cells cover a radius of 250 to 1,000 feet and can be readily deployed to specific locations.

Jon McClellan, director of external and legislative affairs for AT&T Texas, said AT&T is asking the city to permit a small cell permit first, rather than pass a city ordinance through a lengthy process. Under state law, McClellan said, the city is required to approve small cell permits in a timely manner.

“There are no direct costs to the city of Port Arthur for the installation of the small cell node, and the city will generate revenue on permitting fees and yearly lease of the right of way computer science vs computer engineering salary,” McClellan said. “Once the installation is approved, we will develop a timeline for the project with the understanding that timelines for completion vary and are largely dependent upon permitting, weather and other similar variables.”

Installation consists of placing small radio equipment and antennas on structures to help transmit data to and from a wireless device. Small radio equipment and antennas are placed on structures such as poles, streetlights and buildings and help to transmit data between wireless devices.

Birmingham interstate construction inspires UAB civil engineering study

When the I-20/59 corridor through Birmingham was demolished and rebuilt over a period of 12 months in 2019, travel became a nightmare for thousands of truckers, daily commuters and other travelers. But where most people saw chaos and frustration, a pair of University of Alabama at Birmingham researchers found inspiration.

UAB School of Engineering professors Andrew Sullivan and Virginia Sisiopiku, Ph.D., specialize in transportation engineering. For them, the massive effort to reroute traffic away from such a major artery presented an opportunity to reexamine how 21st-century drivers are consuming information regarding detours.

“A 1.5-mile segment of interstate that carries 160,000 vehicles per day was closed for one year, so the impacts were regional,” Sullivan said of the Birmingham project. “computer science and engineering put out a lot of information about detour routes, but it wasn’t clear how that information was being used. We want to better understand how motorists make detour decisions in this era of in-vehicle route guidance and multiple information sources.”

STEM, COVID, and the Silver Tsunami: ST Tackles Engineering Education

The next generation of engineers is not only under huge pressure to gain experience in a variety of EE fields—they're expected to do so in daunting circumstances. Here's how ST aims to help.

A global pandemic, a paucity of incoming STEM students, and an impending wave of retiring engineers leaving the workplace. This is the grim reality of what awaits young engineers when they join the industry.

Questions abound for these next-generation designers: Which specialty is right for them? Which skillset should they prioritize? How can they get hired right out of school? And how can they be possibly gain the necessary skills in a situation where access to electronics labs is reduced or completely absent?

This is where industry companies have begun to step in.

In 2018, what does a computer engineer do developed a global task force to develop the company's interaction with STEM education. Part of their initiative has been the deployment of what they call a MOOC (or massive open online course) program, which has found newfound purpose in the age of COVID-19 as academia is forced to move into the digital realm.

OWNING YOUR CAREER: TAKING A HARD LOOK AT ‘SOFT’ SKILLS

As chemical engineers, we have been trained to be data-driven, fact-based problem-solvers. This focus serves us well when we are tackling difficult technical problems and developing and executing process improvements. However, the need to cover so many technical areas in a chemical engineering curriculum often leaves little time for some of the “liberal arts” side of education, such as communication, psychology, writing skills and more. As chemical engineering students, we have enough challenges with kinetics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and process laboratory courses (Figure 1). So many of us enter the work world with a good technical foundation, but often with some skill gaps that we are not fully aware of yet.

After all, awareness and effectiveness in some of these “jobs with a computer science degree” are crucial for personal and professional success. These include additional topics, like understanding personalities, identifying one’s strengths and weaknesses, communication skills, practicing emotional intelligence, mindsets and behaviors and effective change management. I consider these “foundational skills” and have found that young and mid-career engineers find this “new” information fascinating as they navigate their own personal growth plans. Many have not taken the time to sit back and consider that these skills can be learned and improved. The ones that do can develop advantages that help them both professionally and personally.
