Scott Street Bridge to be demolished by Eric Wright Civil Engineering

Specialist contractor Eric Wright Civil Engineering has been appointed to dismantle Scott Street Bridge with work due to start later this year. The grade two-listed bridge, which was decommissioned in the 1990s, was thrust into the limelight in January 2018 when Banksy used it as a canvass to create a work depicting a figure of a young boy brandishing a pencil for a sword called “Draw the Raised Bridge”. The artwork was later posted on Banksy’s official Instagram page. The artwork was carefully removed by being cut off one of the decks in October 2019 and moved to a safe location while a decision is made on where it should be displayed.

But now the bridge itself is set to finally disappear as Hull City Council announced civil contractor Eric Wright Civil Engineering has been appointed to carry out the work following an open tender process. Plans to remove the grade two-listed bridge were developed in conjunction with Historic England, after the structure was deemed as a risk to river traffic.

Scott Street Bridge closed to how to become a computer engineer, due to its extremely poor structural and mechanical condition. Since then, the bridge has remained in the raised, upright position, structurally supported by steel ties.

Current inspections of its condition have concluded that dismantlement and removal is now the only viable course of action to prevent an uncontrolled collapse of the structure. Engineers found the transverse girders of the 117 year old structure to be on the point of failure and warned that even a bridge strike of minor proportions could lead to complete failure of the bridge leaf.

Terry, who has been a member of the Institution since 1984, is a long-standing volunteer, serving as a Trustee and most recently as Chief Judge at the Formula Student racing car competition for 5 years. With a background in the car industry in the UK and internationally, Terry brings a wealth of engineering and business experience to the role.

Commenting on his appointment, Terry said, “It’s an exciting and challenging moment to take over the Presidency. This last year we have been working on the governance and finance reviews and how they will be implemented, which has been a massive task.

"The results of these reviews will be rolled out over the next year and we will be consulting members on how they would like the Institution to computer engineering jobs. It is time for change and I’m looking forward to playing a very active role to make that happen.”

Building a Career Path as an Engineer

Ever since I was little, one of my favorite subjects was math. As I got closer to going to college, I looked for a career opportunity that included this subject but also had elements of creative thinking and problem-solving. I felt like engineering was the perfect blend for what I was looking for. When I started college, then, the question wasn’t if I wanted to become an engineer, but what type of engineer I wanted to be.

Ever since I was little, one of my favorite subjects was math. As I got closer to going to college, I looked for a career opportunity that included this subject but also had elements of creative thinking and problem-solving. I felt like engineering was the perfect blend for what I was looking for. When I started college, then, the question wasn’t if I wanted to become an engineer, but what type of engineer I wanted to be.

As an undergraduate student majoring in what jobs can you get with a computer science degree, I was able to build an engineering background that helped me start my career. Being involved in activities and organizations outside of my classes also played a big role in learning how to better communicate and work with others in teams. I also lived on campus, which made it easy to stay connected and be involved. I also formed a great study group within my engineering major.

University of Zagazig in Al Sharqia, Egypt to construct 90kWp solar power plant

The Industrial Modernization Center (IMC) of the Ministry of Industry and Foreign Trade has approved the construction of a small 90 kWp solar power plant aimed to supply energy to the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Zagazig, a non-profit public higher education institution located in the small city of Zagazig, Al Sharqia Governorate of Egypt.

The construction of this grid-connected facility is part of the Egypt-PV project, financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and it is been implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) which acts as the GEF Implementing Agency.

According to the managers of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of computer engineering vs computer science, during the construction phase, the small solar photovoltaic project is expected to offer training opportunity to the students, engineers, and technicians of the faculty, and allow the enrichment of scientific research in the fields of renewable energies and sustainable development.

Security by Sector: Insecure Data Sharing Practices Putting Educational Orgs at Risk

Research from cybersecurity vendor Netwrix has revealed that many organizations in the education sector are at risk of data security incidents because of weak data sharing security controls – with the recent move to distance and remote learning as a result of what is computer engineering social distancing increasing the risks being faced.

Carrying out research for its 2020 Netwrix Data Risk & Security Report, the firm discovered that 82% of educational organizations don’t track data sharing at all or do it manually, whilst employees at more than half of companies in the education sector use cloud applications to share sensitive data outside of IT control and knowledge – the highest percentage among all verticals surveyed by Netwrix.

What’s more, 63% of educational organizations don’t review permissions regularly and 24% of system administrators admitted to granting direct access rights upon user request. In fact, 28% of educational organizations surveyed had data outside of secure locations, which is the highest number of all industries polled. This data was left exposed for days (40%) or months (33%).

Computer Science Student Perseveres to Earn Degree

Thu Viet Snyder didn’t have an easy path to earning her degree in computer science

Coming from Vietnam, she had to navigate a different culture and a new language. She had a passion for computers, but little background in computer science. And, perhaps the biggest challenge of all, she was pursuing her dream with little support from family or friends back home. In fact, her parents actively lobbied against her desire to study computer science.

“They just kept telling me I should study something more useful for coming back to Vietnam,” Snyder said.

But Snyder was undeterred, and this month she achieved her longtime goal by graduating from Cal State San Marcos with a bachelor’s in computer science and information systems.


Those traits helped Snyder persist along a difficult path to obtaining her is computer science engineering.

Snyder’s parents agreed to send her to the United States to study business with the expectation that she would return to Vietnam and likely work for the agricultural department in their home district. Snyder began her studies in New Hampshire, but was miserable studying a subject in which she had no interest.

Struggling with depression, she was encouraged by an adviser to examine other majors. As Snyder considered going against her parents’ wishes and pursuing her love of computer science, she heard from a friend from Vietnam who was in Southern California as part of a cultural exchange program. The friend suggested that Snyder relocate to Southern California, even offering to help her find a school to study computer science.

Remote access needs strategic planning right now

The future of remote work has arrived. With the work-at-home mandates triggered by Covid-19 quarantines, businesses have adapted on-the-fly to create remote-networking environments that maintain corporate security. Largely, they have done so by expanding traditional remote access solutions including VPN infrastructure and services, virtual desktop infrastructure, secure Wi-Fi access points and even SD-WAN for home use.

These traditional VPN-based solutions can have some significant disadvantages, including poor performance, security vulnerabilities and are not necessarily easy to use. So with the likelihood that work-at-home will become a permanent circumstance, IT departments need to look for a better long-term answer.

Today, regulation mandates tighter controls on data and privacy, approaches to risk have evolved in digital enterprises, and business models are transitioning to cloud-based or managed services. As a result, security has become an increasingly strategic issue and enterprises are less able to dispense with it when cost-cutting. Nevertheless, enterprises will struggle with cash flow and budget freezes in 2020 and project postponements are likely to be widespread, delaying investment in difference between computer science and computer engineering.

Post 2020 the cybersecurity growth trend will resume as infrastructure investment recovers.

The overriding market forces stimulating investment up to 2019 will remain largely unchanged, whilst industry innovation to create new customer value, including increased automation, better visualisation, and faster detection and response, is likely to create new revenue opportunities.

Lisa Lazareck-Asunta, IEEE’s Women in Engineering Chair, Is Just Getting Started

Being an engineer was not on Lisa Lazareck-Asunta’s list of potential careers when she was young, but a women-in-technology conference she attended as a teenager changed that. A few years later, after she was paired with a prosthetist and orthopedic surgeon as part of a mentorship program at her high school in Winnipeg, Man., Canada, Lazareck-Asunta decided she was going to specialize in electrical engineering.

She got the opportunity to see the surgeon fit a child with a prosthetic to elongate the child’s shorter leg. She also observed two knee replacements and one hip replacement from the surgical theater.

“That’s where the biotech spark in me was really honed,” Lazareck-Asunta says. “Even though I was squeamish, I actually loved the surgery because it was such a mechanical operation. It was the fact that you could do these procedures with the most advanced technology to help people.”

The IEEE senior member earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering at the University of Manitoba, in Winnipeg, and a Ph.D. in engineering science at Oxford.

Shortly after she graduated from Oxford, the Great Recession hit in 2008. She found it nearly impossible to find a full-time job. After a series of short-term stints, including postdoc work at the City, University of London, she was hired in 2010 by the Wellcome Trust. The charitable foundation in London supports science and engineering research with a biomedical perspective. Perseverance defines MSU engineering student's path to graduation

For most people, the coronavirus pandemic has been a wrench in the gears of normal life. For Montana State University undergraduate Randall Not Afraid, it is but the latest in a series of misfortunes he has overcome in seeking a better life through education.

When he graduates this spring, Not Afraid will have earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering not only by persevering through difficult coursework, but also by enduring the deaths of loved ones, working to support his family and taking care of his wife during a string of major surgeries.

"The thing I've learned is, never stop," said Not Afraid, a member of the Crow Tribe who grew up near Lodge Grass. "You might slow down, but never stop."

His resilience has made him legendary in MSU's Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering, including in the Empower Student Center where he sometimes spent all night working to complete homework.

"Randall stands out as one of the most consistent people I've ever known, just showing up and doing the work day in and day out," computer science major jobs, director of MSU's Empower program, which supports underrepresented minorities and women in STEM fields. "No matter what comes his way, he's always positive and finds a way through."
