AT&T boosting wireless network capacity in PA with small cell technology

AT&T is requesting Port Arthur city officials begin permitting small cell nodes in the city as an upgrade to boost the city’s wireless network capacity during the coronavirus crisis.

The small cells cover a radius of 250 to 1,000 feet and can be readily deployed to specific locations.

Jon McClellan, director of external and legislative affairs for AT&T Texas, said AT&T is asking the city to permit a small cell permit first, rather than pass a city ordinance through a lengthy process. Under state law, McClellan said, the city is required to approve small cell permits in a timely manner.

“There are no direct costs to the city of Port Arthur for the installation of the small cell node, and the city will generate revenue on permitting fees and yearly lease of the right of way computer science vs computer engineering salary,” McClellan said. “Once the installation is approved, we will develop a timeline for the project with the understanding that timelines for completion vary and are largely dependent upon permitting, weather and other similar variables.”

Installation consists of placing small radio equipment and antennas on structures to help transmit data to and from a wireless device. Small radio equipment and antennas are placed on structures such as poles, streetlights and buildings and help to transmit data between wireless devices.

Engineering design centre opens to support Hinkley Point C construction

A new engineering design centre in Bristol has opened to support the next phase of construction at the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station.

The UK EPR Design Centre at Aztec West brings nuclear designers and engineers together from EDF – the company building Hinkley – and British engineering partners and suppliers.

The team will be able to quickly resolve issues to support the construction and commissioning programme, using their experience of the EPR nuclear reactor design and UK regulatory environment. This approach draws on experience from other EPR construction projects and is another of the innovations helping to drive efficiency and productivity at Hinkley Point C.

Tilly Spencer, director of computer science vs computer engineering – the UK division of EDF’s nuclear engineering and projects organisation – is leading the design centre.

“Having the engineering capability and skills close to the teams doing work on site is essential to projects being successful,” she explained. “Things crop up and so having that pool of skills based in the UK and able to work directly with construction team to support the schedule and deal with any changes is important.

UK bans Huawei from 5G networks, with total removal by 2027

Huawei’s networking equipment is to be phased out of the UK’s 5G networks, the government announced today. Telecoms operators will not be allowed to buy new 5G telecoms equipment from the Chinese firm from January next year, and they will have seven years to remove its existing technology from their 5G infrastructure at an expected cost of £2 billion. The announcement follows a new report about Huawei’s role in the UK’s national infrastructure from the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre.

The decision marks a U-turn from the government’s previous position, announced in January, which allowed entry level computer science jobs equipment to be used in the country’s 5G infrastructure, with certain limitations. Under that position, Huawei would be limited to a 35 percent market share, and its equipment couldn’t be used in core parts of the network or geographically sensitive locations. Now, however, its equipment will be completely removed from the country’s 5G networks.

Ask the Engineers: 'What is the best way to transfer between engineering industries?

Are you stuck in a career rut or planning your next move? Or maybe you’re a student struggling to decide on an industry. In each issue, we’ll put your burning questions to our panel of seasoned engineers.

"I would say two things: a good level of understanding and experience of engineering principles, and the second thing would be reacting to other industry needs. I spent most of my career in oil and gas but more recently have been working in the renewable market. I have identified the differences in needs for each market and positioned myself to take advantage of this in the renewable market."

"As your career progresses, be aware of how what you do applies to engineering in general rather than specifically to your industry. Look at your own industry to see how its specialisms can be brought to bear and bring a new approach to other industries and make the point in your job application."

"Identify your transferable skills and have a narrative ready for covering letters, discussions with headhunters, computer engineering vs computer science – you need to be clear what you can offer and why your career has been leading to this. Back it up by finding ways to get involved in the target industry, either offering your services voluntarily or through a free-time activity, hobby or project."

Global Cyber Security Market is Forecast to Grow at a Slower Average Rate of 6.2% per year to 2023 Due to Economic Consequences

The global cyber security market is forecast to grow at a slower average rate of 6.2% per year to 2023 due to the economic consequences of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.

The cybersecurity market grew strongly to 2019 due to strong underlying factors including the continued cyber threat and changing attitudes to risk driven by a combination of regulation and improved awareness. Additionally, the growing global economy provided the capital for organisations to invest in new digital processes and the security needed to improve resilience. These interrelated trends, coupled with the low level of security market saturation, sustained industry growth as enterprises invested in new tools and managed security services. The high growth rates are supported by the analysis of 46 cybersecurity technologies and disciplines, 39 of which are still at an early stage in their product lifecycle, characterised by high growth, low customer saturation and large supplier ecosystems. This has led to high levels of private investment in start-ups and delisting of large public cybersecurity suppliers as private equity targets returns from emerging, high growth technology segments.

However, there will be consequences on cybersecurity budgets and reduced expenditure in 2020 even though cybersecurity has evolved significantly since the last recession in 2009. Today, regulation mandates tighter controls on data and privacy, approaches to risk have evolved in digital enterprises, and business models are transitioning to cloud-based or managed services. As a result, security has become an increasingly strategic issue and enterprises are less able to dispense with it when cost-cutting. Nevertheless, enterprises will struggle with cash flow and budget freezes in 2020 and project postponements are likely to be widespread, delaying investment in difference between computer science and computer engineering.

Post 2020 the cybersecurity growth trend will resume as infrastructure investment recovers.

The overriding market forces stimulating investment up to 2019 will remain largely unchanged, whilst industry innovation to create new customer value, including increased automation, better visualisation, and faster detection and response, is likely to create new revenue opportunities.

SHIFTING FROM MEDICINE TO ENGINEERING, STUDENT FINDS HE ENJOYS TEACHING

Daniel Ayoub entered the University of Virginia a student and left a teacher.

The River Vale, New Jersey, native, who will graduate in May with a dual major in electrical engineering and computer engineering, with a minor in mathematics, designed his own one-credit course as an introduction to engineering and has kept it going as the University has shifted over to online classes.

For four semesters, Ayoub was a teaching assistant in the computer engineering department. He soon realized what does a computer engineer do what was clear and understandable to him was not necessarily clear and understandable to the students in front of him, and he sought to find a different way to present that information.

“That quickly humbled me and showed me that I can’t just explain things quickly,” he said. “Presenting the material became a creative process with me to think about, and that ended up being a challenge or a puzzle, especially at the beginning. But seeing students who were discouraged about the material begin to understand it and have an appreciation for the course, that was very meaningful to me.”
