Security-driven networking: The foundation of digital transformation

Digital innovation will transform agencies' network configurations, having an especially critical impact on securing those environments that have seen significant expansion of potential attack surfaces and the deployment of a wide range of new endpoints that require protection. Compared to 20 years ago, today's networks require 50 to 100 times more computing power to inspect and secure traffic than is needed for networking and switching. To adequately protect critical resources and data against new IT security threats, agencies must reconsider their traditional security models as they move forward with modernization.

A security-driven networking approach enables agencies to move away from siloed IT environments and instead integrate their networking and security under a comprehensive and unified IT infrastructure. Using this approach, agencies can defend networks, traffic and network-accessible assets against unauthorized access, data loss and what do computer engineers do even while the underlying infrastructure adapts to changing circumstances.

Secure access service edge (SASE) and software-defined wide-area network (SD-WAN) technologies are designed to merge security and networking into a single, integrated solution that can rapidly and easily scale and adapt to expanding environments and requirements. These forward-leaning capabilities help agencies better plan for the future while ensuring security remains a top priority even amid ongoing changes.

Should Your Organization Get Certified in Cyber Security?

Cyber security is top of mind for many organizations, but most of them question the benefits of getting certified. Lately, there’s a lot of discussion and marketing effort centered around a wide range of cyber security certifications. The point is not the certification, but rather the process of computer engineering career security within your organization that’s valuable.

The certification process against a security standard will help your staff migrate from ad-hoc security activities to holistic and ongoing operational practices that are visible internally and externally.

Internally, cyber security certification keeps security operations and practices top of mind for all staff, not only the IT team. Therefore, security is the responsibility of the entire organization. The process of getting certified enforces good practices and reduces risks.

Externally, a cyber security certification communicates to your customers, suppliers, and the entire business ecosystem that you take cyber security seriously. Many organizations have started to require minimum security operations benchmarks as part of their business contracts. This trend is expanding, so more businesses will follow suit.

The next question I get asked often is, which certification framework should my business use? Since a cyber security certification isn’t a one and done type of thing, the key is to pick one that fits your business operations, scale, and sector. Most certifications are based on the same guiding principles of cyber security, and it’s important to pick one that’s expected and respected in your business sector.

Explore the top 3 zero-trust certifications and training courses

Traditional approaches to security historically included perimeter-based defenses and an implicit trust of network insiders. Zero trust, a wholly different approach to security, treats all users and resources, wherever they are located, as equally untrusted. Organizations will need all hands on deck to implement zero trust, and that will require zero-trust certification and training.

"Zero trust is a team sport," said Holly Felicetta, senior product manager at Forrester, during the organization's 2020 Security & Risk Global summit.

A zero-trust team stretches across IT functions, including security, networking, applications and data, to finance, HR and C-suite executives because financial records and documents contain sensitive data that must be identified, mapped and safeguarded.

"People you have to involve in this may not be engaged in security. They may not even understand the value security has for the organization. But they do understand the value that their data has for the business," said Chase Cunningham, principal analyst at computer science vs information technology. "You need to get them involved as allies.

Understanding zero trust

To facilitate this coordination among different departments, security practitioners must be able to communicate what a zero-trust strategy is and why it's important to the business. But buyer beware: The strategic aspect can get lost in the zero-trust "vendor hype."

Birmingham interstate construction inspires UAB civil engineering study

When the I-20/59 corridor through Birmingham was demolished and rebuilt over a period of 12 months in 2019, travel became a nightmare for thousands of truckers, daily commuters and other travelers. But where most people saw chaos and frustration, a pair of University of Alabama at Birmingham researchers found inspiration.

UAB School of Engineering professors Andrew Sullivan and Virginia Sisiopiku, Ph.D., specialize in transportation engineering. For them, the massive effort to reroute traffic away from such a major artery presented an opportunity to reexamine how 21st-century drivers are consuming information regarding detours.

“A 1.5-mile segment of interstate that carries 160,000 vehicles per day was closed for one year, so the impacts were regional,” Sullivan said of the Birmingham project. “computer science and engineering put out a lot of information about detour routes, but it wasn’t clear how that information was being used. We want to better understand how motorists make detour decisions in this era of in-vehicle route guidance and multiple information sources.”

Huawei’s networking equipment is to be phased out of the UK’s 5G networks, the government announced today. Telecoms operators will not be allowed to buy new 5G telecoms equipment from the Chinese firm from January next year, and they will have seven years to remove its existing technology from their 5G infrastructure at an expected cost of £2 billion. The announcement follows a new report about Huawei’s role in the UK’s national infrastructure from the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre.

The decision marks a U-turn from the government’s previous position, announced in January, which allowed entry level computer science jobs equipment to be used in the country’s 5G infrastructure, with certain limitations. Under that position, Huawei would be limited to a 35 percent market share, and its equipment couldn’t be used in core parts of the network or geographically sensitive locations. Now, however, its equipment will be completely removed from the country’s 5G networks.

OWNING YOUR CAREER: TAKING A HARD LOOK AT ‘SOFT’ SKILLS

As chemical engineers, we have been trained to be data-driven, fact-based problem-solvers. This focus serves us well when we are tackling difficult technical problems and developing and executing process improvements. However, the need to cover so many technical areas in a chemical engineering curriculum often leaves little time for some of the “liberal arts” side of education, such as communication, psychology, writing skills and more. As chemical engineering students, we have enough challenges with kinetics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and process laboratory courses (Figure 1). So many of us enter the work world with a good technical foundation, but often with some skill gaps that we are not fully aware of yet.

After all, awareness and effectiveness in some of these “jobs with a computer science degree” are crucial for personal and professional success. These include additional topics, like understanding personalities, identifying one’s strengths and weaknesses, communication skills, practicing emotional intelligence, mindsets and behaviors and effective change management. I consider these “foundational skills” and have found that young and mid-career engineers find this “new” information fascinating as they navigate their own personal growth plans. Many have not taken the time to sit back and consider that these skills can be learned and improved. The ones that do can develop advantages that help them both professionally and personally.

Student pursues Ph.D. to improve engineering education in underdeveloped countries

Collins Vaye recalls the answer his 10th-grade physics teacher gave when Vaye asked the class, “What is engineering?” His teacher responded, “engineering is the application of math and science to solve real-world problems.”

The term, solve real-world problems, stuck with Vaye, a computer engineering graduate student, who plans to improve engineering education systems in his home country of Liberia and other underdeveloped countries.

Growing up in Liberia, a country filled with richness in terms of natural resources like diamonds, gold and vast agricultural land, but considered one of the poorest countries in the world, Vaye faced challenges that other students did, too. The absence of difference between computer science and computer engineering, a lack of equipment in research laboratories and minimum access to educational resources are some of the many obstacles young students face, hindering their education. Vaye says a 14-year civil war that took place in Liberia severely affected the country’s educational system as well.

Coming from a family of six brothers and sisters who struggled financially, Vaye taught himself to dream big and to remain committed to obtaining higher education to one day make a difference. Fascinated with computers since high school, Vaye would spend hours after school in the computer lab.

He began his undergraduate studies at the University of Liberia. He quickly noticed the lack of educational resources and how engineering skills and concepts were taught, but real-world applications were not part of the course material.

Engineering employment in the US edged up by 0.21% in May compared to April for a total of some 2.5 million jobs, according to the TechServe Alliance, a trade association for the IT and engineering staffing and solutions industry. The increase is an improvement from a 6.5% month-over-month decline in April.

On a year-over-year basis, engineering jobs were down 5.4% in May, or a loss of 143,600 engineering workers.

Separately, IT employment in the US fell by 1.63% in May compared to April for a total of some 5.2 million jobs. computer science vs computer engineering Alliance CEO Mark Roberts said the decline wasn’t a surprise, but it was 15 years ago — during the dot-com bust — when a drop of this magnitude was last seen.

“Given that there was a long-standing labor shortage in IT preceding the Covid-19 induced decline, IT employment will fare far better than most other sectors in the inevitable recovery, Roberts said.
