OWNING YOUR CAREER: TAKING A HARD LOOK AT ‘SOFT’ SKILLS

As chemical engineers, we have been trained to be data-driven, fact-based problem-solvers. This focus serves us well when we are tackling difficult technical problems and developing and executing process improvements. However, the need to cover so many technical areas in a chemical engineering curriculum often leaves little time for some of the “liberal arts” side of education, such as communication, psychology, writing skills and more. As chemical engineering students, we have enough challenges with kinetics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and process laboratory courses (Figure 1). So many of us enter the work world with a good technical foundation, but often with some skill gaps that we are not fully aware of yet.

After all, awareness and effectiveness in some of these “jobs with a computer science degree” are crucial for personal and professional success. These include additional topics, like understanding personalities, identifying one’s strengths and weaknesses, communication skills, practicing emotional intelligence, mindsets and behaviors and effective change management. I consider these “foundational skills” and have found that young and mid-career engineers find this “new” information fascinating as they navigate their own personal growth plans. Many have not taken the time to sit back and consider that these skills can be learned and improved. The ones that do can develop advantages that help them both professionally and personally.

Now is the perfect time for engineering to join the caring professions

Like members of the medical profession currently tackling the Covid-19 pandemic, engineers should be trained to think about the wider impact on people and society of the decisions they make.

We’ve all been struck by the horror and sadness of doctors, nurses and other medical care workers around the world having to make challenging ethical decisions related to caring for computer engineering careers patients. We empathise with their plight and wonder what we would do in their shoes, but try to take confidence in the hope that their years of training and the scenarios they have encountered in their academic courses or residencies will help them.

Indeed, over the past decades, the field of medical humanities - which, according to a paper published in 2002 in the academic journal of the same name, aims to “[understand] the human body not only in medicine’s conventional biological terms but also in sociological, philosophical, psychological and cultural terms” - has been incorporated more and more into medical training.

Many universities now offer standalone degrees in the subject. While humanities training in higher education may not make these difficult choices any easier, it goes some way to preparing medical professionals to meet the challenges they encounter on the job.

Veracyte's Prosigna IDs Breast Cancer Patients Likely to Benefit from Aggressive Chemotherapy

A new retrospective study published in NPJ Breast Cancer on Monday suggests that Veracyte's Prosigna breast cancer prognostic gene signature assay can identify the subgroups of patients who are more likely to benefit from aggressive chemotherapy.

Veracyte obtained exclusive global diagnostic rights to NanoString Technologies' nCounter FLEX Analysis System last December, and with it gained the rights to the Prosigna test.

what is nids -cleared prognostic gene signature assay is intended to be used to gauge the 10-year recurrence risk in postmenopausal women with node-negative (Stage I or II) or node-positive (Stage II), hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. The recurrence risk provided by the test can be useful information for physicians trying to decide how aggressively to treat patients with hormone therapy.

The NPJ Breast Cancer study analyzed data from the DBCG89D trial — a randomized trial of 980 pre- and post-menopausal Danish women with early-stage breast cancer who were administered adjuvant chemotherapy regimens containing the anthracycline epirubicin, or cyclophosphamide/methotrexate/fluorouracil (CMF). The Prosigna 50-gene assay was successfully performed on 686 patients, of whom 38 percent had a basal-like breast cancer subtype, 32 percent had HER2-enriched subtype, 19 percent had luminal A, and 11 percent had luminal B.

Among the non-HER2-enriched, patients, 38 were clinically HER2-positive and 30 were TOP2A abnormal. HER2-enriched is a subtype of HER2-positive breast cancer that's characterized by high expression of ERBB2 and related genes. The HER2-enriched biomarker has also been associated with a higher likelihood of achieving pathological complete response following neoadjuvant anti-HER2-based therapy beyond hormone receptor status and chemotherapy use.
