Faces of the Pack: Engineering student is making a difference in autonomous systems research

Tung Dang is a student passionate about intelligent machines, or robots, and has been involved with research projects since his days as an electrical engineering major.

Kostas Alexis, assistant professor at the computer science department, is computer engineering salary. “I have been very fortunate to have him as my advisor from the beginning. He is always passionate about robotics, which motivates me a lot,” Dang said. “He also sets a very high standard for the research which keeps pushing our research to the frontier, and I can continuously improve myself through that process. On top of that, he truly cares about building a welcome and healthy research environment which is definitely important to me as an international student.”

As Dang continued his research on topics essential to intelligent machines, such as visual importance, path planning and anomaly detection, he realized that this was the career path he wanted to take. Applying to the University’s doctorate program and joining the Autonomous Robots Lab, which primarily focuses on autonomous systems like flying and ground robots, helped Dang discover that he is most interested in projects that have a high impact on society in the future.

Neon platform to help teachers discover brilliant engineering experiences

A new digital platform that brings together high-quality engineering outreach opportunities and inspiring careers resources is being piloted with teachers.

Neon has been designed to bring the engineering community together to help teachers find good-quality engineering experiences, from workshops, speakers and clubs to competitions, events and trips.

It has recently been adapted to include virtual and online experiences, allowing for remote access during periods like the current computer engineering definition when movement is restricted.

Neon aims to make life easier for teachers by curating the UK’s best engineering inspiration experiences and has been developed with strategic support from British Science Association; Department for Education; the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET); the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE); the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE); the Royal Academy of Engineering; Shell, and STEM Learning.

Polaroid photos still work on old-school chemicals and engineering

In the 1970s, Polaroid made instant photography irresistibly simple: Press one button to capture and print a cherished memory (or questionable decision). To this day, the Polaroid Originals company relies on the same dual-layer film, chemicals, and clever engineering as those early cameras did to develop each square. This is how shots come about—computer science degree jobs.

  • Press the shutter button to expose the top film square in an eight-count pack. A photo-sensitive coating on the sheet’s bottom layer captures the image.
  • Rollers squeeze open a pod of chemicals and disperse them between the film’s two layers as it ejects, developing the negative version of the picture.
  • The resulting reaction activates dye on the negative and transports it to the clear surface on the top section of your print, producing the final image you see.

Scott Street Bridge to be demolished by Eric Wright Civil Engineering

Specialist contractor Eric Wright Civil Engineering has been appointed to dismantle Scott Street Bridge with work due to start later this year. The grade two-listed bridge, which was decommissioned in the 1990s, was thrust into the limelight in January 2018 when Banksy used it as a canvass to create a work depicting a figure of a young boy brandishing a pencil for a sword called “Draw the Raised Bridge”. The artwork was later posted on Banksy’s official Instagram page. The artwork was carefully removed by being cut off one of the decks in October 2019 and moved to a safe location while a decision is made on where it should be displayed.

But now the bridge itself is set to finally disappear as Hull City Council announced civil contractor Eric Wright Civil Engineering has been appointed to carry out the work following an open tender process. Plans to remove the grade two-listed bridge were developed in conjunction with Historic England, after the structure was deemed as a risk to river traffic.

Scott Street Bridge closed to how to become a computer engineer, due to its extremely poor structural and mechanical condition. Since then, the bridge has remained in the raised, upright position, structurally supported by steel ties.

Current inspections of its condition have concluded that dismantlement and removal is now the only viable course of action to prevent an uncontrolled collapse of the structure. Engineers found the transverse girders of the 117 year old structure to be on the point of failure and warned that even a bridge strike of minor proportions could lead to complete failure of the bridge leaf.

Terry Spall appointed President of Institution of Mechanical Engineers

Terry, who has been a member of the Institution since 1984, is a long-standing volunteer, serving as a Trustee and most recently as Chief Judge at the Formula Student racing car competition for 5 years. With a background in the car industry in the UK and internationally, Terry brings a wealth of engineering and business experience to the role.

Commenting on his appointment, Terry said, “It’s an exciting and challenging moment to take over the Presidency. This last year we have been working on the governance and finance reviews and how they will be implemented, which has been a massive task.

"The results of these reviews will be rolled out over the next year and we will be consulting members on how they would like the Institution to computer engineering jobs. It is time for change and I’m looking forward to playing a very active role to make that happen.”

Building a Career Path as an Engineer

Ever since I was little, one of my favorite subjects was math. As I got closer to going to college, I looked for a career opportunity that included this subject but also had elements of creative thinking and problem-solving. I felt like engineering was the perfect blend for what I was looking for. When I started college, then, the question wasn’t if I wanted to become an engineer, but what type of engineer I wanted to be.

As an undergraduate student majoring in what jobs can you get with a computer science degree, I was able to build an engineering background that helped me start my career. Being involved in activities and organizations outside of my classes also played a big role in learning how to better communicate and work with others in teams. I also lived on campus, which made it easy to stay connected and be involved. I also formed a great study group within my engineering major.
